A powerful coalition rewrites the future of Black college sports
On July 30, 2025, leaders from four of the nation’s most significant HBCU athletic conferences—MEAC, SWAC, CIAA, and SIAC—gathered in Washington, D.C., to launch a landmark coalition: the HBCU4Us Association. More than a merger, this alliance signals a collective determination to safeguard traditions, amplify visibility, and chart a resilient path forward for Black college sports.
At a retreat held at the Salamander Hotel, commissioners from the four conferences announced their collaboration to present a unified front on behalf of HBCU athletics. This group represents over 40 storied institutions and steps forward, together, for influence and advocacy that extends far beyond sports arenas.
Hbculegacy encapsulates the driving force behind HBCU4Us. The coalition is committed to preserving athletic heritage, supporting financial viability, and fostering future success for student-athletes. It aims to amplify the collective voice of HBCU sports in national conversations and ensure sustainability amid shifting college sports landscapes.
This alliance arrives at a moment when collegiate athletic autonomy and exposure are more critical than ever. By uniting, HBCU conferences can better negotiate media rights, streamline event collaborations, and share resources—advancements that were previously hindered by fragmented governance. It also strengthens HBCU presence in broader dialogues about sports equity and institutional investment.
The alliance signals potential ripple effects across HBCU sports initiatives. One timely development comes from the CIAA, which is advancing women’s flag football toward NCAA varsity status. With NFL encouragement and the sport’s likely Olympic debut in 2028, this progression highlights how collective solutions can accelerate equity and innovation across conferences.

Beyond press releases and boardrooms, this coalition nurtures community. It embodies the HBCU spirit of unity, resilience, and cultural capital. For student-athletes, it conveys that their fields, courts, and stadiums are just the beginning—not the boundary of their potential.
