Hampton University remains in the Top 10 of U.S. News & World Report’s Best Historically Black Colleges and Universities for 2025–26, holding at No. 7 and ranking as the top HBCU in Virginia, according to the publication’s latest list. The placement extends a two-year run inside the Top 10 and reflects continued gains in outcomes the magazine tracks, including graduation and student success.

In a university statement, President Darrell K. Williams called the recognition a reflection of “access and excellence,” pointing to stronger on-time graduation rates, career placement and expanded support for first-generation and nontraditional students. Administrators emphasized social mobility, noting scholarships and targeted advising that reduce debt burdens and help students complete degrees on schedule.

Program strength also factors into Hampton’s standing. The university highlighted recognition for undergraduate engineering, computer science and psychology, along with national notice for graduate offerings in physics, earth sciences, physical therapy and speech-language pathology. Leaders cast those programs as workforce pipelines that align with employer partnerships and early-career earnings benchmarks.

Hampton’s research profile—classified as Carnegie R2—continues to shape its footprint in atmospheric science, cancer treatment and aerospace. University materials estimate an annual economic impact of roughly $530 million across the region and the Commonwealth of Virginia, underscoring Hampton’s role in innovation and workforce development.

Recent third-party nods extend beyond U.S. News. Money named Hampton to its “Best Colleges in America” list, and Coastal Virginia Magazine recognized the university as the region’s best private college, reinforcing the school’s broader reputation among prospective families weighing cost, time to degree and return on investment.

Founded in 1868, Hampton describes its mission as pairing rigorous academics with mentoring and student resources that drive persistence and long-term success. With the new rankings in hand, leaders framed the moment as validation of a strategy centered on outcomes, affordability and opportunity.
